•In 1615 Samuel de Champlain found his way into this region. In 1860 the nearest store was at Rosseau,46 miles away. It took three days to go and return back to this area.
•The Rev. John Machar was born in 1796. Later the Township of Machar was named after him by his good friend E. Stewart who had surveyed the Township of Machar.
•In 1854, a geological survey called the South River the "Red Chalk River" or "Nanamitagong" meaning "Paint River" because of its iron rust colour.
